Transportation projects, HCW collections limited, Fall festivals, and More

I hope this unofficial front end of fall finds you, family and neighbors well. I've been all over the 6th District visiting with neighbors, friends and businesses.

One of the many things my wife and I love about Lake County is that there are plenty of things to do and places to eat and drink: We have an abundance of fine restaurants, venues and attractions that contribute to economic activity and a $1.5 billion industry.

So I was thrilled to see that our hospitality, entertainment and dining businesses were on the rebound recently at a meeting of Visit Lake County, our convention and tourism bureau. We not only have gorgeous autumn drives to offer but also unique venues like the Volo Museum -- literally down the road. I was surprised to know that the legendary Batmobile has its home there (that's me with the car, minus the cape).

I'm also happy to report that the County Board has provided support to Visit Lake County and our tourism industry during the pandemic.

We managed to allocate $225,000 in federal CARES and ARPA funds to help the beleaguered tourism industry during the pandemic. In addition, county hotel tax collections provide up to $90,000 a year to bolster the hospitality industry here, supporting some 12,000 jobs. Fortunately, with businesses and tourism rebounding, hotel occupancy rates are back up to 70 percent.

There's more on the way this fall and next year as we hopefully return to normal operations after COVID. Visit Lake County also sponsors Lake County Restaurant Week and the Libation Trail, which features many local bars, brewpubs and dining destinations. All of this is essential in helping our small and medium-sized businesses thrive and grow, which spurs economic development and employment.

Suicide Prevention
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. We have an array of resources to help those in need. Click here for county resources.  And if you know anyone in despair, they can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 any time.

Forest Preserve News
As the weather cools, our Forest Preserves become even more popular. Not only is the Hike Lake Challenge on now, we still have programming at our Independence Grove Beer Garden.

Come and hear music while enjoying local craft brews and wine. Our SeptOberfest is underway, which features entertainment and events on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

As always, it's my pleasure to serve you. I am available to speak at your faith, service group or community event.
